Epoxy Garage Floor Coatings: A Buyer’s Guide

Not all epoxy garage floors are created equal! If you are thinking about having your garage floor redone, there are several factors you’ll want to consider as you receive quotes. In this blog, we’ll review the top features of our product, as well as some aesthetic choices you’ll want to think about. These are some of the items we always make sure to review with clients when we do in-home estimates on epoxy garage floor coatings.

The Drawbacks of DIY Epoxy Garage Floor Coatings

You can get an at-home epoxy floor kit from your local hardware store, but it is definitely one of those situations where you get what you pay for. DIY kits aren’t manufactured with durable, professional grade materials.

But it’s more than just the quality of the materials—it’s whether you have the time, machinery and skill set to do all the prep work involved.

Before laying the epoxy, we use a big diamond grinder to grind the concrete until we reach the grit layer. It’s imperative to get all of the sealant off or the epoxy won’t bond properly to the floor. We then take a hand grinder to do the edges and any other small spaces that the large machine won’t fit.

If you skip the grinding step and just power wash and degrease the floor, you will get an inferior product that does not last.

Aside from the hassle of prep work, DIY kits are often water based or don’t have 100% professional grade epoxy, which is why lots of DIY epoxy garage floors start chipping within a couple years.

Our suggestion–save yourself the headache and get a professional installed epoxy garage floor coating that will last for years.

Smooth vs. Textured Finish

Our epoxy garage floors have a bit of a rough texture to them. This is imperative in Steamboat! With all the snow we get, the texture provides traction so you don’t slip getting in and out of your vehicle.

We create this effect by using a lot of polymer flakes. DIY kits usually don’t provide enough flakes to create a textured finish. And while we can create a smoother surface for other spaces, for garages in particular we recommend a textured finish for traction.

Colors

When we come out to measure your garage floor, we will bring samples of the different color flakes that we offer.

But if you don’t see a blend that you like, we can order additional blends from our supplier, including custom color options.

Whether or Not To Epoxy the Apron

The “apron” is the strip of concrete that extends just outside the garage door. It’s up to your preference on whether you’d like to epoxy it, but a good rule of thumb is to epoxy it if the driveway is blacktop, but to not do it if the driveway is concrete. In the case of a blacktop driveway, this allows for a seamless look when the garage door is open.
