Spring Cleaning Your Closet

We usually begin our spring-cleaning session by doing the easy tasks first. After we have scrubbed the bathroom floors, vacuumed the rugs, and cleaned the kitchen counters, there is one task that is often considered as a mountain of a chore –  spring cleaning your closet.

Most people find it one of the complex and tedious chores to do. It is hugely time-consuming, and there are no shortcuts. But consider the reward of opening your closet and finding everything well-organized and in the right place. There is nothing that you don’t wear in there, so you don’t have to shuffle through them.

The key to making the most of your custom closet design is to keep it organized according to plan. Without further ado, let’s get cleaning.

Step 1: Get Yourself Ready

Before you open your closet and allow the large heap of stuff to fall on you, take a few minutes to prepare yourself. You can set up a playlist of music you love to listen to while doing the chores. You can even light an aromatic candle and treat yourself to some coffee during preparation.

Have at least two boxes clearly labeled as “To be Tossed” and “To be donated.” Also, ensure that you get some suitcases to store away your winter clothes, which you will not be using for the next few months.

Once you are ready with all things you will need handy, it’s Go Time!

Step 2: Start with Purging

There is no ideal location or a perfectly drawn start line to indicate where to begin. We usually like to work from left to right, but you can start wherever you please. Begin by identifying those items that you surely want to get rid of.

Bring down the clothes, one stack at a time, and go through them. If you find a shirt that you have not used since 2017, chances are you will not be wearing it anytime soon. Donate. How about those pants with the ugly stain that you promised you would remove but couldn’t? Toss.

It helps to try on a few clothes before deciding to donate or toss them. As you go through the closet, you find that expensive top you purchased almost two years ago, and it still has tags on it. You want to wear it, but when you try it on, it doesn’t fit. Chances are it will not be fitting you anytime soon. Donate it.

It can be quite a pinch to get rid of your old clothes, as you have a lot of memories attached to them. But to keep your closet clean and tidy, you will have to get over the sentiments.

Step 3: Store the Seasonal Clothing

In Steamboat Springs, winters are harsh, and we need proper winter clothing. These clothes will not see the light of day again until at least seven months from spring. Take all your winter clothing, put them in bags and suitcases, and store them away. Getting these items out of your sight is half the battle won.

Keep your logical hat on while you purge winter items. Since you have worn the few sweaters you have over and over, you might be tempted to get rid of them right now. But the sweaters will seem exciting and fashionable during the next winter season. Similarly, since you have not seen your summer clothing for a while, all your summer items will look fashionable right now, and you might be tempted to keep them all. But it is essential to decide what to keep and what to purge logically.

Step 4: Follow the One-Year Rule

Okay, this might sound a bit strict. But to make space for new items and make your closet look tidy, look for all the items you have not put on for at least a year. Get. Rid. Of. Them. Why? Because if you haven’t worn them in a year, you never will. Please go through the items, and see which are in good shape; consider donating them. Those that are not; definitely need to be tossed. This rule does not apply to occasional wear.

You can begin your year by keeping all the hangers facing you. If you use an article of clothing, flip the hanger to face the other way. At the end of the year, and trust us on this, there will be some hangers that will be untouched.

Step 5: Organize the Closet

Now that you have removed everything, you don’t need to plan how you want to keep the items you have. You might require some storage solutions, or if you want to get creative, consider getting a custom closet design. Put that into your planning.

For now, start by folding everything neatly and stacking them in a logical order. Do the same for items that need to be hung from hangers. Since you have removed a lot of clutter, you will notice that restacking your closet is much easier, and you will feel that you have a brand-new wardrobe.

Step 6: Appreciate Your Effort

With everything stored in the closet, take a step back and admire your hard work. Give yourself a pat on the back, and maybe treat yourself to another cup of coffee.

Plan where you would like to donate the items in the “to be donated” box. Will your sibling fit in those jeans that were too small for you? Or would you instead take them to the thrift store? Decide what suits you best, and get the clutter out of your house as soon as possible.
